There are a few dead-tree compendiums of file formats (for example, the Encyclopedia of graphics file formats), but it's still typically a chore to track down the details of a particular file format. (PDF? Ok, Adobe must have something on their site about it: argh! searching for "pdf" brings up every pdf file on the site! Word 6? Ick, I have to poke around Microsoft's website? Blargh.)

Fortunately, an intrepid programmer by the name of Paul Oliver has put together a fairly comprehensive online depository (categorized, and with a search engine) of file format information. It's quite facinating just to browse about. Not only did I find file formats that I didn't know about, I found ones I didn't want to know about them either!

And if you can't find it there, but do find it elsewhere, take a moment to let him know so the next poor sod who's trying to import all her Casio Calculator Files to Excel can catch a break.
