Ken Livingstone

, known as "Red Ken" for his way-left tendencies, is London's first elected mayor.

The mayoral elections had two rounds. In the first, Livingstone got 38.11% to Tory Steve Norris' 26.5%. Frank Dobson, who beat Livingstone to be named the Labour candidate, earned a paltry 12.78%.

Because no candidate got a majority, second preferences were counted, and Livingstone earned 57.92% to Norris' 42.08%.

Just think how differently the U.S. elections would turn out with a better electoral system.
