.....
All but two of the 155 demonstrators were released starting at 10pm Friday and continuing throughout the night. This is a major victory of the solidarity and courage shown by these people. The legal team was able to negotiate a deal where all 155 people plus the 600-700 who posted bond could sign-off to a $5 jaywalking ticket. This is a traffic infraction: no record, no paperwork, no future court dates. Some demonstrators gave their names and some did not. A supporter donated the $5 for each of the 155 people who were still in jail. Those released were greeted by a festive group of 75-100 who had maintained the vigil, which will continue in solidarity with the general population, and the last two demonstrators in custody.
Two remain in custody for clerical reasons but will be released soon. Approximately 1,350 protesters have been arrested over the last three days of the protest: 600 Saturday, 40 Sunday, and 700 Monday. Three were charged with felonies, the rest with misdemeanors. After being almost completely denied access for two days, the legal team has been able to see most of the demonstrators.
There were 20 charged with federal charges, including 3 felonies. The legal team is planning to take these cases to trial if necessary, although the process takes weeks. Please call the legal team at 202-842-4479 if you can volunteer, donate, or supply other needs like food or office supplies.
