I know lots of folks, including progressives, who shop at Whole Foods Market here in Dallas and Houston. And Whole Foods trys to play up its reputation among progressives by marketing itself as one of the 'corporate good guys'. But this reputation is hardly warranted by the facts.

Whole Foods is very anti-union, and none of its stores have ever had one. The UFW has condemned Whole Foods for its treatment of strawberry workers. Whole Foods likes to pass itself of as an eco-friendly food co-operative-like operation, but that's very misleading.

Some so-called progressive folks find Whole Foods anti-union stance enlightened, but that's just bluewashing. The Texas Observer sees through that nonsense, as do Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair.

After reviewing all the facts, you may still be tempted to shop at Whole Foods, since it's probably still better than other corporate grocers. Before doing that, however, think about trying out a co-op or the local farmer's market, where you can buy directly from local farmers if you're careful. If your local area doesn't have a co-op, how about starting one?
