The [Austrian Interior] minister reportedly said that it would be better for Austrian youngsters to spend their national service time helping the elderly and the disabled in their own country.

According to an Austrian volunteer at Yad Vashem, quoted by the paper, the decision was influenced by Georg Haider's rightwing party.
Yad Vashem is the Israeli Holocaust Memorial.
