Dead Soccer Fans

I doubt that Americans can ever understand the extreme fervor that grips fans of soccer. Maybe it's because the game is just not that exciting that the fans create their own excitement.

Some English soccer fans were killed in Turkey.

Mark Jackson ... said: "It is just appalling. You go to a football match to support your team - you do not expect to be stabbed and get killed."

The violence broke out at about 2030 BST in the Taksim Square in the centre of Istanbul.

It is unclear what sparked it but some reports said Leeds fans were taunting a van driver.

In the running battles that ensued Mr Loftus and Mr Speight, both from Leeds, were stabbed.
