About nine years ago, I was living in a rented duplex in Atlanta's hip Morningside neighborhood, a long-time Rolling Stone subscriber (which I have since let lapse), and in search of dark, smoky music. I read about Morphine in RS, and discovered that it was exactly what I was looking for. I purchased Cure For Pain, quickly followed it with their debut, Good, and later bought Yes and Like Swimming as they were released.

Like most Morphine fans, I was shocked last year when I learned that Mark Sandman had collapsed and died onstage.

Now the surviving members of Morphine have released The Night, the album they had just completed before Sandman's death. I'm buying it.
