I wondered what the heck Orrin Hatch was up to with his
presidential candidacy. He didn't have a weird ax to grind, a
la Alan Keyes. And virtually no one had expressed any interest
in voting for him before he came in dead last in the
Republican caucuses in Iowa and quit.
Jonathan Chait, a political writer for The New Republic,
theorizes that Hatch was just trying to get close enough to
Dubya to get a cabinet job, or, dare he hope, the v.p. slot.
