Monkeyfist's Election Watch

Ok, so the election is Tuesday. This you already know. Some of us will be active at polling places during the day, encouraging those Loyal Liberals to sneak in some Nader and Green votes, defying Party Discipline as often as possible.

The Monkeyfist.com crew will be watching the election returns via the Web, TV, and radio, and we'll be hanging out on our chat channel, providing running commentary, witty and sarcastic editorials on the fly.

Nader and the Greens

Working For Change coverage of the nader campaign.

(eBijan) ""Screw the corporate media!!" young women screeched when Brokaw asked about Nader being "spoiler."" Scream it sister!

So, is Gore's losing good or bad for Nader/Greens/Left/Progressives.
posted by (eBijan) at 2:10:48 am

(kendall) both... :>
(kendall) May make coalitions on issues a lot harder to build, since Dems will be pissed at us for a long time
(eBijan) Can we use this to kill the DLC?
(kendall) Whether accurate or not, it makes Greens nationally look just like Greens in NM starting in '96: spoilers from the left who try to pull the Dems leftward, which will tend to hurt the DLC
(kendall) and since Gore didn't take a single non-centrist issue, DLC can't scream that the candidates leftism hurt them, like w/ Dukakis

Ok, it's down to FL. Niether Gore or Bush can win without it. So that means WI DOESN'T MATTER!!!
posted by (eBijan) at 1:43:42 am

(eBijan) So you wimpy, scared Greens for Gore, you WASTED YOUR VOTE! It absolutely didn't matter but it could have helped Nader.
(eBijan) And, y'know, if Gore loses FL, you will have UBER-WASTED your vote. You would have voted for Gore and still gotten Bush.

5% bid appears dead, ala.

(kendall) locally, it seems that TX stays on ballot

Debate Impact?

(kendall) Be nice to find out what impact debate had on voter decisions.
(dru) Its effect on me was to reassure that both major parties are firmly against democracy in America.

Does Nader message need tweaking?
posted by (kendall) at 11:04:00 pm

(kendall) when you can't get most of the votes from the people who agree with you... what does that mean?

NPR talks about the "mischief Nader did to Gore's campaign".

High turnout, good or bad for Nader?
posted by (eBijan) at 9:43:40 pm

(eBijan) Short term--bad, since a higher turnout depressed the Green percentage.
(eBijan) Long term--maybe good. It's blacks and unions. Gore will clearly owe them big (if he wins) and they'll know it.
(eBijan) If Gore (as it likely) doesn't pay up, they'll be ripe for wanting to punish Gore in 2002.
(kendall) i think the support today for gore proves that unions and blacks are forever locked to the Dems.
(eBijan) This means that Greens have to push this line, not just argumentative though. I.e., they need to be good allies in obvious ways.
(kendall) Yes, and that's true regardless. :>
(kendall) So we can certainly agree with that.
(eBijan) True. Perhaps the value is just propagandistic against the greens. We can say, "Look at that! Those should be our votes!!"
(eBijan) Or rather, "Look! These are real political organizations! We should take them seriously."
(eBijan) After all, it's not just the votes, it's the politcal organization.
(eBijan) Plus, I really do think it's Fear of Bush and not Love of Gore.
(kendall) Of course it is, but that doesn't make 5% :>
(eBijan) Unlike with Bill Clinton who really resonated with Blacks.
(eBijan) That's why I think their coming out so hard for Gore is a boon for greens/progressives. Gore will flub it.

Tight race through the midwest really hurts Nader
posted by (kendall) at 9:43:01 pm

(kendall) this is so disheartening since many folks will vote Nader in the West if Gore were ahead comfortably
(kendall) since it's going to be very close, West Coast progressives are going to depart Nader in droves, and that will almost certainly destroy Nader's chances to get 5%.
(eBijan) Well, one can hope that during the "gore spurge" earlier this evening week kneed Naderites voted.
(eBijan) Of course, such folks will wait until the last minute.

You gotta love that it being very close in the East drives up voter turnout in the West, where Nader's strongest. Yeah!

(eBijan) That's good! Especially considering that the states in question are not exactly Nader strongholds.
(eBijan) It's probably all VT's doing! Go Vermont!
(eBijan) Ha ha ha! Buchy's sucking out, and the Libertarians are behind Buchy! :)
(eBijan) Not that this means anything. 1%!

(eBijan) The slimeball. If Gore wins, his senate seat basically falls to the Reps.
(dru) Not suprising, considering Gore's apathy towards funding for Dems in Congressional races
(eBijan) I think Cockburn wrote that Gore basically sabotaged the 1996 congressional elections (by holding back funds) in order to keep Gephart out of the Speaker's seat.
